Understanding the Writing Process

Since we're going to learn how to write, we should first think about the meaning of writing.

Why Write?

Writing won't help you become the star sprinter(短跑名星)on the track team. And it won't give you a beautiful singing voice. But writing will help you in four very important ways.

Writing will help you...

1. become a better student. Writing in a learning log about the subjects you are studying helps you understand and remember things better. Writing clear essays and paragraphs shows your teachers what you have learned.

2. understand your experiences. Writing in a personal journal helps you sort out your thoughts about the everyday happenings in your life.

3. connect with others. Writing e-mail messages and friendly letters keeps you in contact with the people that mean the most to you.

4. enjoy life. Writing poems, stories, and plays allows your to be creative and have fun with the language.

Remember...

You can become a very good writer. All it takes is practice. That's why all of the writing that you do is important---no matter if you are writing for yourself or for an assignment.

Understanding the Writing Process

Baseball players have it tough, trying to hit an incoming fastball with a small, rounded bat. Even the best ballplayers usually get a hit only three out of ten times at bat.

Writers have it tough, too. They rarely come up with their best work in one try. In fact, writers may come to the plate many times before getting a "solid hit." That's why writing is often called a process. The best stories and essays have gone through a series of steps or stages before they are ready to share.

This lesson will explain the steps in the writing process and help you to build good writing habits along the way.

The Writing Process

If you work on your writing step-by-step, there's a good chance that you will be happy with the results. The steps in the writing process are described below.

1. Prewrite

The first step in the writing process is getting ready to write. You select a topic, collect details about it, and plan how to use them.

2. Write 写作

During this step, you write a first draft. It is your first chance to get all your ideas down on paper.

3. Revise 修改

You start revising process by reviewing your first draft. Then you change the parts of the content that may be confusing or incomplete.

4. Edit 编辑

Next, you check your revised writing for errors and write a final copy.

5. Publish 发表

In the last step, you share your final copy. This makes all of your work worth the effort.

Second Task for you: 你的第二个任务

Think about writing. Suppose a student said, "Writing is easy. You just write everything down and then hand in your paper. ” What advice would you give to this student?

Third Task for you:第三项任务

Creat a mini-poster. Design a writing -process poster on a piece of notebook or computer paper. Include a title, a short statement about the writing process, and an interesting graphic.

Working with the traits

Because writing is a process, you don't have to think about everything at once. Instead, you can deal with the six traits of writing (shown below) when they become important. For example, ideas are important right away, while word choice becomes more important later on. Here are some of the key things you have to think about during your writing.

What main ideas should I include?

How should I organize my details?

Do I sound interested in my topic?

Have I used the best words?

Will readers enjoy my sentences?

Have I checked for errors?

Use the process. Match each activity on the left to its proper place in the writing process on the right.
