1．flog/beat a dead horse 鞭打死马；做无用功
如果马死了，你再打它，它也不可能走了。所以flog/beat a horse表示做无用功，事情已经无可挽回，再在这类事情上纠缠也只是白费口舌、徒耗精力。
应用典例：
① --Are you sure we can't procure a new car?

2.Between a rock and a hard place陷入两难困境；面临两难选择
Between an roack and a hard place字面意思是“被夹在一块岩石和一堵硬壁之间”，想从两边哪个方向出去都很困难。多用于形容受夹板气或面临两难选择。
应用典例：
① Some off-farm workers are stuck between a rock and a hard place. If they don't take harsh and underpaid work, they will have to suffer unemployment and poverty.
